Wimbledon: Taylor Fritz reaches fourth round with win over Davidovich

LONDON, JUL 4 (AGENCIES)

Taylor Fritz beat Davidovich 6-4, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 in what marked his first match at the championships not to go to a fifth set.
The American’s first two rounds at Wimbledon against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Gabriel Diallo both went the distance.
Despite a near scare in the third set after losing the tiebreak to the Spaniard, Fritz enjoyed a much shorter match against Davidovich.
With 14 sets played already in SW19 and having played three grass-court tune-up tournaments before the major, the ATP number five gave an update on his fitness after the match.
Cameron Norrie powers into fourth round at Wimbledon as Brits march on: Cameron Norrie is on his best Wimbledon run since reaching the 2022 semi-finals after outlasting Mattia Bellucci to reach the fourth round on his favourite Court No.1. The Italian world No.73 showed he is a real talent with his big serve and forehand. But after a tight first set, his fellow left-hander Norrie ground down his resistance to win 7-6 6-3.
Steady Norrie won 19 points out of 22 in a hot streak in the second set before the streaky Italian, who beat Britain’s Oliver Crawford in the first round, refound his mojo and fought back from 1-5 down.
But the steady British No.3 still reached the last 16 at a Grand Slam for the fifth time and will face either Brazilian teenage superstar Joao Fonseca or Chilean qualifier Nicolas Jarry on Sunday.
Benjamin Shelton brushes past Hijikata in 71 seconds upon resumption:
It took Benjamin Shelton just 71 seconds to punch his ticket to the third round at Wimbledon on Friday. The American was already in command, leading Rinky Hijikata 6-2, 7-5, 5-4 when their match was halted Thursday night due to fading light at 9:29 p.m. local time.
Sixteen hours later, Shelton strode back onto No. 2 Court with one goal: finish it quickly. Four crisp swings of the racquet later, it was game, set, and match as per ATP. Aiming to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon for the second consecutive year, Shelton will next meet Hungarian Marton Fucsovics.
Naomi Osaka loses to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the 3rd round: Naomi Osaka might be more comfortable on grass courts these days but she will once again leave Wimbledon in the third round after a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 loss to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Friday.
Osaka is a former No. 1 now ranked 50th and a four-time Grand Slam champion, all on hard courts — she won the U.S. Open and Australian Open twice apiece.
Pavlyuchenkova, who is ranked 53rd, was the 2021 runner-up at the French Open, and Friday’s victory moved her into the fourth round at Wimbledon for the first time since she was a quarterfinalist nine years ago.
Australian Open champion Keys latest seed to tumble out: There were to be no Fourth of July celebrations for American Madison Keys as she joined the exodus of seeds from Wimbledon with a 6-3 6-3 defeat by 104th-ranked German Laura Siegemund in the third round on Friday.
The sixth seed looked a far cry from the player who won her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open earlier this year, racking up unforced errors – 31 in total – and wayward serves on a sun-drenched Court Two.
The match will not live long in the memory for those in attendance, save for 37-year-old Siegemund who, after a trade of breaks early in the first set, went 4-2 up on Keys’ serve with a cute dropshot. From there, the German saw out the first set.
The German, now the oldest player left in the women’s singles draw, jumped with glee upon sealing victory and will play her first ever Wimbledon fourth round against Argentine lucky loser Solana Sierra.
Kartal wins nine games in a row to claim biggest win of her life: Britain’s Sonay Kartal surged into the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time on Friday with a remarkable turnaround performance against French qualifier Diane Parry as she won nine games in a row to come from 4-1 down to triumph 6-4 6-2.
Parry, who hammered 12th seed Diana Shnaider in the last round, was in control early on as she mixed up low, slow backhand slices with a pounding forehand that left Kartal scratching her head.
The Briton eventually got to grips with the challenge, however, and, roared on by a partisan Number One court crowd, began an unstoppable drive that secured the first set and put her 4-0 up in the second.
Parry’s spirit seemed to have disappeared along with her accuracy and the 23-year-old battling Briton took full advantage with a relentless forehand fusillade to claim the biggest victory of her injury-hit career.
