Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has informed that several districts of Nagaland have experienced strong winds accompanied by rain and hailstorm over the past few days, resulting in damage to residential houses and infrastructure.
In a press release, secretary NSDMA, Sentiwapang Aier, said the reports from affected areas indicate that multiple households sustained damage due to strong winds, while trees were uprooted in several locations, causing further impact on property.
In some areas, NSDMA said disruption of power supply was also reported following the adverse weather conditions.
As per reports received from the districts, NSDMA said several incidents of damage have been reported.
In Chumoukedima district, as per district situation report (DSR), approximately 31 families have been affected due to windstorm incidents reported from multiple locations including Piphema, Sovima, and other villages.
Houses have sustained varying degrees of damage, including severely and partially damaged kutcha and pucca structures, along with damage to attached structures. Infrastructure such as electric poles and community structures have also been affected. However, it said no casualties or injuries have been reported. NSDMA said assessment of crop damage and evacuation details were under process, adding that relief measures were being initiated.
In addition, NSDMA said further damages to houses and shops have been reported from Piphema and surrounding areas, and more reports are awaited from the district.
In Peren district, as per DSR, 15 families and one PHC have been affected due to flash flood and related incidents. Houses have sustained damage including three fully damaged, eight severely damaged and four partially damaged houses. Reports from Pehlan village under Ahthibung subdivision indicate additional damage to houses, while incidents have also been reported from New Jalukie village and Ngwalwa circle, NSDMA ssid, adding that further reports from various subdivisions were awaited.
In Mokokchung district, preliminary reports received from ADC Mangkolemba indicate damages caused by the windstorm. NSDMA said detailed reports were being compiled through the District Situation Report (DSR).
In Wokha district, damage reports have been received from Bhandari/Baghty area awaiting detailed assessment.
In Zunheboto district, the quarter of a nurse adjacent to CHC Akuluto was damaged due to strong winds.
In Tuensang district, damages have been reported from Longkhim subdivision, Tuensang town (Phingjang area) and Trumzong area, where houses sustained damage.
In Niuland district, damage has been reported from Yeveto village.
In Mon district, GMS Totok Chingha school sustained damage due to heavy storm and rain. Roofing of five classrooms and the Mid-Day Meal storage room were damaged, and food grains meant for the Mid-Day Meal programme were affected, disrupting normal school functioning.
NSDMA said it was closely monitoring the situation and advised citizens to remain cautious during such extreme weather conditions and to take necessary safety precautions.
Thunderstorms, strong winds expected till Mar 21
Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) Tuesday issued weather warning of unsettled conditions across the state from March 17-21, 2026.
In a press release, secretary NSDMA, Sentiwapang Aier, informed that most districts were likely to experience frequent thunderstorms, lightning, and light to moderate rainfall during that period. It stated that weather activity was s expected to be more intense on March 17 and 18, 2026 with conditions gradually improving in some areas from March 20 onwards.
NSDMA predicted strong surface winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph in isolated places, especially on March 17 and 18. Districts likely to be affected include Peren, Dimapur, Kohima, Phek, Wokha, Mokokchung, Tuensang, and Kiphire. It cautioned that gusty winds could cause damage to temporary structures, uproot trees or branches, and disrupt power supply and transportation. Further, NSDMA predicted that widespread thunderstorm activity was expected in districts such as Dimapur, Kohima, Wokha, Mokokchung, Mon, Tuensang, Zunheboto, and Peren throughout the forecast period.
Meanwhile, some districts including Kiphire, Phek, and Zunheboto could see improved weather conditions with reduced activity towards March 20 and 21, 2026. It informed that cloudy to overcast skies were also expected intermittently in Kohima, Wokha, Niuland, and Tseminyu.
