Wokha by-poll: Patton, BJP flay attack on candidate

DIMAPUR, JUN 16 (NPN): Deputy chief minister Y. Patton and State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have strongly condemned the reported incident of intimidation and physical assault involving BJP candidate Mhomo Humtsoe during the Ward-8 (Tsumang B) by-election in Wokha on June 16.
In a statement, Patton asserted that violence, threats and attempts to instil fear had no place in a democracy, stressing that elections must be decided through the ballot and not by intimidation or disorder.
Describing the incident as deeply unfortunate and contrary to the values of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and democratic participation, Patton said every candidate, party worker and voter, irrespective of political affiliation, deserved to participate in the electoral process without fear or harassment.
While calling for accountability wherever wrongdoing was established, he appealed to BJP karyakartas and supporters to remain calm, disciplined and united and not allow provocation to distract them from democratic principles. He also urged all political parties, leaders and supporters to uphold the sanctity of the electoral process and ensure that the by-election was conducted in a peaceful, free and fair manner.
Meanwhile, BJP Nagaland also condemned the incident and said such occurrences had no place in a healthy democracy. The party expressed gratitude to the district administration and police authorities for their swift response in apprehending the accused and for imposing Section 163 of the BNSS to maintain law and order and prevent further disturbances. It also urged the authorities to initiate stringent action against those responsible.
The party appealed to all political parties, supporters and citizens to maintain peace, exercise restraint and respect the democratic process, while reiterating its commitment to peaceful participation and a free, fair and transparent electoral process.
