National Rural Drinking Water and Sanitation Awareness (NRDWSA) Week was launched on March 17 at Wokha local ground with the Deputy Commissioner, Wokha, A Robin Lotha, as the chief guest.
In his speech, A Robin Lotha exhorted on the importance of good sanitary practices and the dire need to conserve water.
Chief Medical Officer, Wokha, Dr. Enrinthung Kikon, emphasized on the diseases arising due to water and unhealthy sanitary practices and stated that 80% of the diseases were water borne and due to unhealthy sanitary habits.
Junior Education Officer, Wokha, Nchumbemo Jami, emphasized the importance of water and urged the public to use water judiciously.
The programme was chaired by Er. Vihoto Achumi, Executive Engineer, PHED Wokha.
On the following, a workshop for WATSAN committee members on sanitation and water quality monitoring and surveillance was held at Lotha Tribal Council Hall where IEC consultant, Miss Nisa, briefed upon the importance of water and sanitation and a demonstration on handling and usage of Field Testing Kit (FTK) was instructed by chemist, Aremo Ovung.
The programme was chaired by Er. Kedo, SDO, Wokha where FTK was distributed to all the WATSAN committees.
The weeklong sanitation awareness campaign concluded with an inter-high school essay and painting competition on the theme, “Necessity of preserving water for human survival and benefits of clean sanitary practices” at Youth center, DBHSS. PHED staff also carried out cleaning of water sources and reservoirs during the week-long campaign.
