In yet another hit-and-run case, a 53-year-old woman reportedly died on the spot after being hit by a car near Padampukhuri gate here on Saturday morning.
According to police sources, a speeding Maruti Alto hit a woman pedestrian and also hit a scooty, before crashing into the road divider on the highway.
The impact of the collision was so huge that the woman, who was out for her morning walk with her daughter, was propelled to a nearby wall, resulting in serious multiple injuries. The victim was rushed to Olive Hospital where she was declared brought dead.
Officials identified the victim as one Madhumala Debbarma, a mother of three and originally from Tripura.
According to reports, the driver attempted to flee the scene by speeding away, but hit a scooty near the village gate and eventually crashed into the road divider. The scooty rider sustained minor injuries.
Traffic police officials said the incident occurred around 6:15 a.m. and that the driver of the vehicle was apprehended.
Traffic officials said a case had been registered at East Police Station and further investigation was underway. The accused was identified as one Titova (38). It was also learnt that there were two other occupants in the vehicle.
