‘Women for Trees’ campaign begins site assessments

The “Women for Trees” campaign, under the AMRUT Mitra initiative by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), has commenced pre-site visits across Nagaland. The campaign aims to promote environmental sustainability while empowering women in urban spaces.
In Dimapur, on May 23 officials from the District Urban Development Agency (DUDA), Dimapur, conducted a pre-site visit at the IHSDP Housing Complex, Burma Camp. Along with members of Eminent Self-Help Groups (SHGs), they evaluated tree plantation suitability and identified potential locations. SHG members also recommended tree species for the initiative. City Nodal Officer Ekumyala led the assessment team.
A similar visit took place on May 21 at Kathing Park, Mokokchung, conducted by DUDA in collaboration with the AYANU SHG. The team examined the site’s condition and feasibility for tree planting. AYANU SHG members actively participated in discussions, emphasizing the importance of green spaces and pledging to take responsibility for maintaining the saplings. Phase-II plantation drives will be held from June 5 to August 3, 2025.
On May 22, the Muho SHG of Phek town visited the under-construction site at CMHSS Compound, assessing plantation areas for their contribution to the campaign. Led by Asst Urban Development Officer Er. Kesoweu, the team confirmed that 150 trees would be planted in upcoming drives. Women involved in the initiative, known as Amrut Mitras or “friends of the trees,” will ensure regular care and monitoring of the saplings.
