A large number of womenfolk carried out a torch rally in Imphal on Wednesday evening, calling for peace, protection of civilians, and restoration of harmony in the conflict-ridden Manipur.
Leaders of several prominent women based organizations staged the torch rally after paying tribute to the fallen heroes of Anglo-Manipur War 1891 at historical BT Park where Saheed Minar stands.
The rally was jointly organized by Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL), Manipur Women’s Social Reformation and Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj), and the All Manipur Chingmi-Tami Apunba Nupi Lup (Tami Chingmi).
Starting from Wahengleikai in Imphal West, the demonstrators marched through key locations in Imphal, lighting torches in memory of those who have lost their lives in the ongoing crisis. The rally passed through notable locations such as Sahid Minar on Bir Tikendrajit Road, Hicham Yaichampat in Yaiskul, and the Thangal General statue at Konung Mamang Traffic Island, where torches were solemnly lit in tribute.
Slogans like “Long Live Manipur” and “Let Mothers Save the Land” echoed through the streets, capturing the essence of the collective call for peace.
Talking to the reporters on the sideline of the rally, Nupi Samaj president Th Ramani stressed that the ongoing violence in Manipur cannot be ignored any longer. “We are deeply concerned about the state’s future within India. The current suffering demands immediate action and sincere intervention,” she said.
Ramani also emphasized that “it is time for everyone to unite and work towards rebuilding peace in the region.” AMKIL president Lourembam Nganbi said that the rally served as a symbolic gesture of mothers’ anguish over the loss and suffering in the state. “The silent cries of those affected cannot be ignored. We urge the public and authorities to show courage and commitment to bring peace,” she said.
Nganbi also called upon various civil society groups and associations to come together and safeguard Manipur’s collective future.
