A workshop-cum-awareness programme on “Compost Food Waste at Home” was held on Saturday at Lion’s Club, Dimapur, organized by Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) in collaboration with the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) initiative to promote “Awareness Generation of Mission LIFE Activities.”
Delivering keynote address, NPCB member secretary K Hukato Chishi, emphasized the significance of composting in reducing waste and improving air quality. He highlighted the role of the State Pollution Control Board under the Water and Air Act, mentioning that the organization has been tasked with promoting sustainable practices like composting to address pressing environmental challenges.
Hukato, explained how food waste, if managed effectively through composting, could play a critical role in reducing solid waste and improving air quality. He urged participants to adopt composting practices at home, emphasizing the collective responsibility of individuals in contributing to a cleaner environment. “If every household segregates and composts food waste, it will greatly ease the burden on DMC’s solid waste management efforts,” he said.
DMC councillor and sanitation in-charge Achum Jami underscored the importance of environmental stewardship, urging participants to adopt composting as a sustainable solution to manage food waste.
He highlighted the potential of composting to transform food scraps into nutrient-rich fertilizer, benefiting home gardening and reducing landfill waste. Jami also encouraged beneficiaries to provide feedback on the usage of composting bins distributed during the event.
The programme included various activities such as an awareness session on ambient air quality by senior scientific assistant Olivi G Chophy, a session on solid waste management by scientist ‘B’ Yanathung Kithan, and an introduction to Mission LIFE by junior scientific assistant Rongsenben Longkumer. Hands-on training on using composting units, a discussion and interaction segment, and the distribution of composting bins were also part of the event.
Earlier, DMC CEO Thungchanbemo Tungoe chaired the programme who also welcomed the gatherings, invocation by pastor Imnatoshi Longkumer, president of the Nagaland Baptist Pastor Union, while junior scientific assistant Hanpong Y Konyak delivered the vote of thanks.
The workshop aimed to empower households to manage food waste effectively and contribute to a cleaner, greener Dimapur.
