KOHIMA, AUG 21 (NPN): Press Information Bureau (PIB), Kohima, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, organised a one day media workshop “Cyber Suraksha Abhiyan: Protecting Citizens from Digital Fraud” at Hotel Japfu, Kohima, on Friday.
Experts from NIELIT Kohima, including Atoshe Lohe, principal and Forensic Analyst, and Visezo Dahou, faculty, Cyber Security, addressed the workshop.
Lohe highlighted the Money Restoration and Grievance Redressal modules of the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, launched by the Ministry of Home Affairs in April 2026.
He explained that the modules streamline recovery of funds lost to financial fraud and address grievances, including frozen bank accounts. Warning against fake investment schemes and impersonation of banks, Lohe advised citizens to download applications only from trusted sources and cautioned that remote access apps such as AnyDesk can be misused to gain control of devices. He stressed the importance of reporting incidents promptly through the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930 and the portal, noting that early reporting increases chances of fund recovery.
He further underscored challenges in cybercrime investigations due to multiple platforms and encrypted channels, calling for continued capacity building of law enforcement agencies.
Presenting data, Dahou said India recorded financial losses of Rs.22,495 crore to cyber fraud in 2025, with 28.15 lakh complaints registered.
He noted that fake investment and trading scams accounted for 76 per cent of reported losses. Urging citizens to adopt the “Pause, Verify, Report” approach, he cautioned against guaranteed return schemes, fake trading platforms, “digital arrest” scams, AI voice cloning frauds, fake loan apps and APK files from unofficial sources.
He reminded citizens never to share OTPs, PINs, CVVs or passwords, clarifying that a UPI PIN is required only to send money, not to receive it. On sextortion and online blackmail, he advised victims not to pay or engage with perpetrators but to preserve evidence and report incidents.
Dahou added that Rs. 11,158 crore had been saved across more than 32.80 lakh complaints through the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System as of June 30, 2026.
The workshop was attended by representatives of local media houses, members of the Kohima Press Club, Akashvani Kohima, Doordarshan Kendra Kohima, PTI, and students from St. Joseph’s College and Nagaland University.
