Workshop on forming ‘Alcoholics Anonymous’ in Phek

A two-day workshop was conducted by the District Mental Health program (DMHP) Phek with New Covenant Ministry for formation of “Alcoholics Anonymous” at District Hospital, Phek (DHP) on July 11-12.
A press release by National Health Mission (NHM) Phek stated that, during the workshop, nodal officer DMHP Phek, Dr. Along Pongen said “alcoholics” encounter several problems which does not only affects physical health but affects mental, emotional and psychological health as well.
Sharing the challenges of dealing with “alcoholics”, Dr. Along emphasised that use of abuse substances affects not only themselves but the people who lives with them.
The resource person, Imlisungkum said “Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)” started in the year 1935, co-founded by Bill W and Dr. Bob. He also noted that several AA groups was effectively functioning in Nagaland with the church along with many support groups.
Resource person, Moatemsu stated that AA group was for like-minded people who wants to recover, and added that the group typically consists of “closed” or “open” meetings.
Stating that because of weak support system, “alcoholics” often relapse, he said recovering from drug or alcohol addiction required willpower and especially the recovery group support.
Moatemsu also explained the spiritual principles of twelve steps of AA and noted that AA 12 steps embody Biblical teachings.
A demonstration of AA meeting was also carried out and emphasis on the purpose of AA meetings was also shared to the participants of the programme.
