
One day national level workshop on prevention, early intervention and rehabilitation of People with Disabilities (PWDs) was organised by Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities, Regional Centre Kolkata on September 29 at EBRC Hall, Longleng.
A press release by Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Longleng office stated that the workshop was organised in collaboration with CMO Longleng, Dr. Obangjungla and Youth Action for Social Service Nagaland.
Chief guest of the inaugural session, Deputy Commissioner (DC) and chairman District Task Force (DTF) Longleng, M Shayung Phom lauded the team for coming all the way from Kolkatta to educate the people of Longleng on the importance of hearing, prevention, early intervention and rehabilitation of people with disabilities.
In a short speech, CMO Dr. Obangjungla said that deafness was usually the result of inner ear or nerve damage, which may be caused by a congenital defect, injury, disease, certain medication, exposure to loud noise or age-related wear and tear. She also spoke on the symptoms, when to see a doctor, causes, how hearing loss can occur and risk factors etc. and added that there are many challenges in a person with speech and hearing disabilities. In the technical session, Indranil Chatterjee, lecturer (Sp&Hg), AYJNISHD, Regional Centre Kolkata, spoke on challenges of prevention and early intervention of persons with hearing impairment; Anupam Das, vocational counsellor AYJNISHD, Regional Centre Kolkata spoke on convergence of various resources for rehabilitation of persons with disabilities vis-s-vis role of different stakeholders; Dr Prosenjit Majumdar SWO, AYJNISHD, spoke on rights and various government provisions for persons with disabilities and Samir Ghosh, All India Co-Ordinator, DIL Project, AYJNISHD spoke on use of disability information help line for channelizing government schemes.
