Workshop on SEL handbook for Nagaland concludes

A two-day workshop focused on co-developing the Morung Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Teachers’ Handbook for Nagaland was held at the SCERT Conference Hall in Kohima on April 24 and 25.

The event was jointly organized by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Nagaland, and Bangalore-based non-profit Dream a Dream, which specializes in life skills education.

The workshop brought together key stakeholders from the education sector, including representatives from the Directorate of School Education (DoSE), SCERT, Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE), DIET, and members of the Dream a Dream team.

The collaborative effort sought to design a culturally relevant SEL resource for teachers of Classes 3 to 12, helping them better address students’ emotional and social needs amid various challenges such as socio-economic hardship and infrastructural limitations.

SCERT director Kevirale-u Kerhuo, inaugurating the event, emphasized the need to integrate SEL into Nagaland’s education system, stressing its role in fostering safer and more inclusive learning environments. She underlined the importance of equipping teachers with the skills necessary to create emotionally responsive classrooms.

Facilitated by Revanna and Venu from Dream a Dream, the workshop followed an experiential and interactive format, encouraging open dialogue and shared ownership in shaping the SEL curriculum.

Participants engaged in reflective exercises, reviewed findings from a recent need assessment on student well-being, and collaborated on designing a practical SEL framework.

One of the key outcomes of the workshop was the establishment of an initial framework for the Morung SEL Teachers’ Handbook, which aims to guide educators in nurturing the emotional resilience and well-being of students.

The initiative marks a significant step toward embedding SEL into Nagaland’s education policy, ensuring that the state’s teachers are equipped to support students through holistic, emotionally enriching learning experiences.
