Workshop on strengthening governance, capacity building

The Nagaland Education Project – The Lighthouse (NECTAR) convened a one-day orientation and discussion workshop at the Administrative Training Institute (ATI), Kohima, on April 29.

The event aimed to facilitate knowledge sharing and coordination among all sister departments under the Department of School Education and SCERT, focusing on the key initiatives and expected outcomes of the “Strengthening Governance and Capacity Building” component of the project.

Delivering welcome address, Shashank Pratap Singh, Principal Director of the Directorate of School Education emphasized the workshop as a collaborative effort to improve education quality in Nagaland.

He described the “Strengthening Governance and Capacity Building” component under NECTAR as one of the largest in terms of stakeholder engagement, involving departments such as School Education, NBSE, SCERT, and Samagra Shiksha.

He encouraged the participants to actively engage, lead discussions, and focus on sustaining reforms and best practices. Kevileno Angami, Commissioner and Secretary of School Education and SCERT, while delivering keynote address, said the workshop as an overdue but significant gathering, uniting departments with the shared goal of fostering holistic school development, nurturing children, and delivering quality education to prepare students for a rapidly evolving global landscape. She highlighted the importance of collaboration among departments to complement each other’s work, avoid duplication, and achieve the common objective of holistic child development and quality education.

The workshop agenda included an introduction to NECTAR initiatives, an overview of the “Strengthening Governance and Capacity Building” component, group discussions on progress and sustainability, testimonials on programs such as the School Leadership Development Programme (SLDP) and the School Review and Improvement Programme (SRIP), a review of career pathways, revisions to SMC/SMDC guidelines, and discussions on exam reforms, among other topics.

Officials from the Department of School Education (DSE), Directorate of School Education (DoSE), State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE), Samagra Shiksha, and NECTAR attended the workshop.
