Vethozo Lohe, the newly crowned gold medallist in the 78 kg Youth Category (Right Arm) at the International Federation of Armwrestling (IFA) World Arm Wrestling Championship Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was accorded a warm welcome at Dimapur Airport on Monday. The reception was organized by Western Chakeshang Hoho and attended by family members, well-wishers, and supporters.

It may be mentioned that Lohe, in addition to his first-place finish in the right arm, also secured the fourth position in the left arm category. Accompanying him was Avilie Zuyie of Rüsoma village, Kohima, who also put up a commendable performance, clinching fourth place in the right arm under 86 kg youth category and fifth place in the overall left arm category, was also accorded warm welcome. Both represented Nagaland and India.

Lohe triumphed in the 78 kg category by defeating Georgian arm wrestler Luka Tabagua in a thrilling final match. The IFA World Arm Wrestling Championship witnessed participation from 24 countries, with nearly 50 athletes from across India competing in the championship.

Team Nagaland, comprising eight players, clinched an impressive total of 14 medals in the national championship, earning them a spot in the World Armwrestling Championship. However, due to financial and passport constraints, only Lohe and Zuyie were able to represent the state in the international stage.

Addressing the attendees at the reception, advisor and former president of WCH, Dietho Rhakho, conveyed heartfelt congratulations to both Lohe and Zuyie on behalf of the Western Chakhesang community. He emphasized that this achievement was not just a cause for celebration for the Chakhesang people, but for all Nagas. “This is a splendid moment of joy and an inspiration for all Naga youths. The world has opened its doors to us” he remarked, encouraging Naga youths to pursue their dreams without hesitation and carve a niche for themselves on the global stage.

Rhakho underscored the need for Naga youths to engage in various fields, including sports, music, and innovative ventures, in this rapidly changing world. He further expressed optimism that through Lohe’s triumph, the spotlight would shine on Tizu, potentially paving the way for further opportunities in the region.

Expressing concern that sports in Manipur received more recognition and support, Rhakho urged the state government to invest more in sports infrastructure, recognizing its potential to bring about positive change and recognition for Nagaland. He also called on the state government to institute awards for Naga youths who bring honour not only to the state but to the nation, as a means of encouragement.

Lohe’s father in his message expressed gratitude towards Yanpvuo Kikon for his mentorship and the Nagaland government for their financial support. He also thanked the well-wishers who stood by Lohe throughout his journey.

Meanwhile, speaking with media, Lohe revealed his rigorous three-year preparation for the competition, noting that he had attempted to participate last year but couldn’t. He extended his gratitude to his mentor, Yanpvuo Kikon, and Neli Dominic, his trainer. He also emphasized on the importance of faith in God and hard work.
