World Day against Child Labour; pledges strict action

DIMAPUR

The World Day Against Child Labour, was observed at Central Plaza in Kohima with a strong call for action and public awareness. The event was organised by the Labour Department along with the District Task Force Kohima on June 12.
Deputy Commissioner B. Henok Buchem, addressing the gathering, stressed the need for vigilance and community support to combat child labour and abuse. He noted a rise in cases of abuse, once rare in Naga society, and warned that offenders would face serious consequences.
“This is not just a legal matter—it’s about ethics and humanity,” he said, encouraging citizens to protect children and support one another. He also shared a personal note urging kindness: “If you can’t help someone in distress, at least don’t harass them.”
Joint Labour Commissioner Chubayanger outlined the strict provisions under the Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition & Regulation) Act, 1986. The law bans employment of children below 14 and prohibits adolescents (14–18 years) from working in hazardous industries such as quarries, kilns, and welding units. Offenders can face jail terms or fines up to ₹50,000.
The programme included an oath ceremony led by DC Buchem and SP Teisovise Metha. Labour Inspector Mhaletuonuo Keditsu chaired the event, with addresses from Assistant Labour Commissioner Nimenuo and DCPO Sekho Dawhuo. A song by Kevi Children’s Home added a heartfelt touch.
Officials, colony leaders, and community members pledged to work together to end child labour.
