KVK Dimapur celebrated World Soil Day at Dhansiripar village on December 5.
A press release from KVK Dimapur stated that, chairman of the village council, Joydhwaj Hasnu, encouraged the gathering to utilise the opportunity provided by KVK. He also urged them to extend all the cooperation required from time to time while carrying out soil testing and to come forward to get their soil tested. V. Kenny Rhetso, CTO (Home Science) stated that soil testing was important so that crops may be given their required nutrients.
Z. James Kikon, ACTO (Soil Science), briefed the farmers on soil health and its management and also the benefits of getting soil tested. Various steps involved in the soil sample collection were discussed during the interaction. A total of 27 participants attended the program.
Longleng: ICAR KVK Longleng celebrated “World Soil Day” on December 5, under the theme “Be the solution to soil pollution”, with Deputy Commissioner Longleng, John Tsulise Sangtam as the chief guest. A press release from KVK Longleng stated that speaking at the occasion, the chief guest emphasised on individual efforts to prevent environmental pollution by reducing use of single use plastic bags, cups, and bottles which ultimately pollute the soil. The DC stated that the district administration was making efforts to ban the use of plastics in the district. He also said that as most of the people in rural areas depend on agriculture as their main source of livelihood, so farmers should reduce the use of salt in their fields, which not only deteriorates the soil but will ultimately affect their means of livelihood in the near future.
SMS (Horticulture), Dr. R. K. Roshan also spoke at the program. The importance of soil health card was discussed by SRF, Namei. Soil health card along with fertilizers like urea, SSP and MOP were distributed to 74 farmers followed by a training session on soil health management during the technical session. The day long program was chaired by SMS (Animal Science), Dr. Lily Ngullie. Altogether 82 farmers including officials from district agriculture and horticulture departments attended the program.
