Week-long celebration of “National Rural Drinking Water and Sanitation” awareness week cum “World Water Day” concluded here at jubilee memorial hall Tuensang organised by DWSM, PHED Tuensang and sponsored by WSSO PHED Kohima on Tuesday, with sub- divisional education officer Shamator, Chubanungla Imchen as the chief guest.
Speaking at the closing programme, Chubanungla stressed on the importance of water and sanitation that covered clean home, environment, surroundings, food and clean self etc.
The chief guest further pointed out that, with the growth of population and lack of awareness, the basic sanitation has become one of the challenging factors in “our” daily lives which could lead to epidemic and other live threatening diseases.
She also encouraged every responsible citizen and students to practice good sanitary habit and disseminate the message in order to keep environment healthy. She further expressed gratitude to DWSM, PHED Tuensang for organising awareness week in Tuensang.
Also speaking at the programme, chemist DWSM, PHED Tuensang, Tzutipokla Lkr emphasized on the quality of water and its standard and stated that, the main objective of water quality survey was to determine the physical, chemical and bacteriological characteristics of the water. Tsutipokla also explained about diseases caused by chemical contamination of water and their prevention and further encouraged for getting the drinking water tested on regular basis at the laboratory.
IEC consultant DWSM, PHED Tuensang, Ashale Seb highlighted the activities conducted during the awareness week. Earlier, the programme was chaired by S&H consultant DWSM, PHED Tuensang, Rongsentula while vote of thanks was proposed by JE, PHED Tuensang Er. Khitangpila. Khumkitong Sangtam presented a special song on the occasion. The department also awarded the inter school essay competition to the winners and participants during the function.
KOHIMA: Kohima commemorated World Water Day 2016 organized by PHED at the Conference Hall, Office of the Executive Engineer, Kohima Rural Division, Tuesday.
Exhorting the gathering, WSSO Director, Er K G Sumi spoke on the importance of the national rural drinking and sanitation awareness week.
He pointed out that most Naga villages are situated on the hilltop, which made it difficult for water accessibility since water comes from the top and flows through the downhill.
Sumi said that in this regard, the Department was finding difficulty to implement water supply, however water harvesting was a big achievement.
He also stressed on maintaining sanitation and hand washing with soap.
While urging to take responsibility on solid waste management, Er. Sumi informed that schemes one solid/liquid waste management would be arriving soon in the villages.
Speaking on “World Water Day”, Chief Engineer PHED, Er. Kevisekho Kruse apprised that water crisis in Nagaland lead to consequences such as deforestation, global warming and climate change.
He lamented that due to huge deforestation in the state, water sources are drying up.
The Chief engineer informed that a project has already been completed at Patkai Christian College, which has a capacity of 9 million litres of water, accommodate a population of 3000.
He suggested on rainwater harvesting to address water scarcity problem and urged the participants to initiate innovative ideas through low cost technology to solve the problem of water in the State.
Executive Engineer Kohima Rural Division, Er. P Jakpou Khiamniungan spoke on the Individual Household Water Supply connection, while SDO, Kohima Rural Division, Er. Ruokuovituo Vizo spoke on WATSAN accounts.
The programme also marked the closing function on the Nation Rural Drinking Water and Sanitation awareness week 2016.
On the occasion essay and drawing competition were held, winners under essay competition first position was bagged by Chungpongmar of St. Paul School Phesama, second position by Vimezonu Tetso of Government High School Jakhama and third position by Vilezon, Loyola of Hr. Secondary School. Under drawing competition, first position was bagged by Vinohonu Khieya of Loyola Hr. Sec School, second position by Pelevizo Yhokha of Loyola Hr. Sec School and third position by Ruopfüvi Savi of John Hr. Sec School and Vimhakhozo of St. Paul School Phesama.
DIMAPUR: Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur, Kesonyü Yhome (IAS) said that those districts who have access to drinking water need to give a thought to those who do not have access to it, by saving and using resources judiciously, to save and conserve water for the benefit of neighbours and people around them.
Speaking as the chief guest at the closing function of National Rural Drinking Water and Sanitation Awareness Week at Christian Higher Secondary School (CHSS) Covenant Hall, Dimapur, Yhome dwelt on the problems and challenges faced for access to potable water and the impending dangers, especially through chemical contamination. He also expressed concern over the growing iron content in Dimapur district. He said that while having access to water is a challenge, the bigger challenge the country faces is the access to safe and potable water.
He urged the students to share the information gathered in their families and community, while putting it into practice and inculcate good habits like hand washing before food, drinking clean water, saving and conserving water, keeping the future generations in mind.
P.Khetoi, Executive Engineer, PHED (Urban) division delivering the keynote address gave a background of the National Rural Drinking Water and Sanitation Week 2016 which was launched on March 16 last in Dimapur and activities that were undertaken like visits to 18 villages for Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRAs), planting of tree saplings and testing of water sources, organizing rally with schoolchildren, Water and Sanitation (WATSAN) Committees, NGOs and inter- school essay competition on the theme, “Conservation and safe handling of drinking water and good sanitary practices.”
He also urged upon the students and teachers present to evolve and inculcate a conservationist mindset from today and to act as brand ambassadors in spreading awareness on conservation of forest, so as to conserve water. He shared basics on saving water and adopting healthy lifestyle changes.
Akangsha Das, Holy Cross Higher Secondary School was placed in first position, Yesanbeni Murry of Holy Child School emerged second, Roshida Begum of Christian Higher Secondary was placed third while S.Paongmai of North Town Higher Secondary got the consolation prize. The winners were given certificates and took home cash prizes of Rs.5000, 3000, 2000 and 1000 respectively besides certificates to all the participants.
The vote of thanks was delivered by the Executive Engineer (Rural) division, Dimapur, Er.L.Tongpang Longkumer. The programme was chaired by Vibou Seyie, IEC Consultant, PHED (R) Dimapur while invocation was pronounced by Bokali, CHSS, Dimapur.
MOKOKCHUNG: Coinciding with the culminating programme of National Rural Drinking Water and Sanitation Awareness campaign from March 16 to 22, World Water day was observed at Longkumer Kilem Mokokchung on March 22 with SDO(C ) Mokokchung, T.Lemlila Sangtam as the chief guest. The programme was organized by PHED Mokokchung and sponsored by Water & Sanitation Support Organization (WSSO) PHED, Kohima, Nagaland.
The chief guest in her speech stated that since World Water Day was celebrated each year to increase the awareness among the people about the importance, need and conservation of water, the community needed to come forward and work hand in hand with the department in promoting clean water conservation. She also stressed on the need to educate the village functionaries and especially the youth as they play an important role in the society.
Water status of the district was presented by E.E, PHED Mokokchung, N.Yanger Pongen and Sanitation Pledge was administered by Alemjungla Longchar, Chemist. (DIPR)
MON: National Rural Drinking Water and Sanitation Awareness Week concluded today with the observance of World Water Day at Executive Engineer PHED Office at Mon.
The week-long National Rural Drinking Water and Sanitation Awareness was observed for sensitization and appraisal of the mission. In the concluding function, speech on the importance on quality water was delivered by Watinaro. Short speech was also given by Tamal Datta. Vote of thanks was proposed by S. Aochuba Longchar. The programme was chaired by Medoseto Kiso. (DIPR)
WOKHA: In Wokha the function was jointly organized by PHE dept. Wokha along with Team Metamorphosis. Leaders of various levels from nineteen villages attended the function held at the LTC hall.
E.E PHE dept. Wokha, Engineer Vihuto shared on the importance of water conservation and the scarcity of water being face by the whole world. He further said that leaders of the world were calculating that the third World War would occur due to water scarcity. Chemist of the department, Ovung shared on the role of water in everyday life and how use of pesticides and other chemical could contaminate the ground water as had already happened even in Punjab. Team Metamorphosis, an active NGO in the district presented a power point video and a short play making the audience understand the judicious usage of water, conservation and plantation of appropriate trees, conservation of water in times of plenty so that during lean season one could still have sufficient water to meet the various needs of daily lives. The meeting started with a prayer by evangelist Daniel Lotha, chaired by SDO Sanis, Er. Limhathung Odyuo and the vote of thanks was pronounced by president Team Metamorphosis, Thungdemo Kyong.
