World Zoonoses Day observed at Tuensang District Hospital

DIMAPUR: World Zoonoses Day, observed annually on July 6 to mark Louis Pasteur’s successful administration of the first rabies vaccine in 1885, was commemorated at District Hospital Tuensang under the theme “Working Together: Preventing Zoonoses through Community Action.”
The programme, organised by NOHP PCZ, Sentinel Surveillance Site, was held at the School of Nursing and attended by over 70 participants, including student nurses, healthcare workers and staff.
Chaired by Sungjemmenla Thonger, laboratory technician under the project, the event began with a welcome address by Dr. Tochi Chang, nodal officer, who highlighted the importance of observing World Zoonoses Day and the role of NOHP PCZ.
Dr. Mohan Sharma, microbiologist at the Integrated Molecular Diagnostics and Research Laboratory (BSL 2), District Hospital Tuensang, delivered the theme talk, stressing the role of community members in controlling the emergence and spread of zoonotic diseases. Undergraduate interns from Tinsukia College, Assam, also shared insights on diseases such as scrub typhus, Japanese encephalitis and leptospirosis.
The interactive session provided a valuable learning opportunity for nursing students, who actively participated to make the programme impactful. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dekhingridi Sangtam, BSL 2 technician.
