Western Sumi Hoho (WSH) has appealed to all organisations, unions and Naga political groups (NPGs) to extend total cooperation by stopping all forms of fund/donation drives and taxations within its jurisdiction in Dimapur and the two newly-created districts of Chümoukedima and Niuland.
WSH president Shikaho Zhimomi and general secretary Kisheto Chishi in a press release said the appeal was being made to give the people and the younger generation a chance to explore themselves to their full potential, to redeem themselves and enable good and undiluted development to get a foothold in the land. They pointed out that the appeal was made to all so that the people did not miss the bus of development and prosperity that beckoned them today.
In order to make a beginning, they said Western Sumi Hoho had on January 18 held a consultative meeting with all its executive heads and area chairmen under its jurisdiction covering Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland districts, whereby it was resolved to bring about and create an environment of peace and security conducive for germination of ideas and wholesome development.
According to Zhimomi and Chishi, the celebratory spirit of Christmas and New Year came early for Western Sumi people with upgrade of Niuland and Chümoukedima as the 14th and 15th districts of Nagaland respectively. Admitting that upgrade or expansion of administrative set-ups might not be a guarantee for good governance, they however mentioned that it certainly was justification for obtaining schemes.
They however cautioned that the schemes would be of little import if people of the two new districts carved out of Dimapur failed to address the issues that ought to be handled with cooperative wisdom, and if the society was to come out of the shadow of doubt, confusion and conflict.
Mentioning that celebrations were momentary and that WSH was deeply aware that the more things changed, the more they remained the same, the duo said this was the reason for the hoho to seriously ponder over the painful reality that there was so much of poverty and very less of prosperity. For too long, they alleged that governance had taken a backseat and old problems continued to dominate, which could not be wished away unless there was radical change in the lifestyle and thinking of the people.
They said the society was adrift and the failure of polity to correct it had created an overall negative impact economically, socially and morally. There was “ism” both socially and politically, which fractured the society and communities in so many different ways, they added.
The WSH leaders underlined that it was everyone’s bounden duty and responsibility to ensure that the root of “ism” was uprooted at the nascent stage, at least from the psyche and mind of children. They stressed that the regressive politics of riding on the back of culture and tradition would have to give way to coming together of minds for a contemporary modern approach to living in peace and harmony.
Noting that nothing remained constant except change, Zhimomi and Chishi said change had certainly come to Western Sumi areas with the upgrade of Niuland and Chümoukedima as districts, adding that the excitement of inhabitants of the two new district was palpable and understandable.
However, they cautioned that Niuland and Chümoukedima would miss the bus without change in the framework of thinking, doing and living.
They said Niuland and much of Chümoukedima were bereft of any development and therefore they would not be starting again afresh, but would have to endure a raw beginning.
This meant creating the primary need to promote entrepreneurial skills and infrastructural facilities. And for this to happen, they stressed that connectivity, i.e., good roads must be there.
They regretted that corruption in all its form and heads was prevailing till date and was the reason for the deplorable condition of roads in Niuland district. It was the sum result of why there was abundance of poverty and not prosperity, they pointed out.
