WSSU reiterates opposition to tobacco sales

Western Sumi Students’ Union (WSSU) has reiterated strong opposition to the sale of tobacco products near educational institutions and medical establishments, as well as advertisement of such products through hoardings and newspapers.

In a statement, WSSU president Ikato Khulu said such practices directly violate the COTPA 2003, which prohibits sale of tobacco within 100 meters of schools and hospitals and restricts tobacco advertisements.

Despite repeated appeals to the authorities, WSSU said there has been a consistent disregard from both the administration and relevant departments. WSSU warned that it would be compelled to take further action within 48 hours if necessary.
