WTC undertakes waste clearance, urges action on drainage issues

DIMAPUR:

As part of its ongoing sanitation drive, the Wokha Town Council (WTC) has undertaken clearance of waste near First Cry Shop along NH-2, caused by waterlogging and overflow of drainage.
In a statement, WTC chairperson, W Myingthungo Kikon noted that the situation was a man-made catastrophe resulting from non-compliance of residents who continue to dump waste along drainage systems. It urged community members to actively participate in keeping the town clean and to report instances of waste dumping.
The council further observed that drainage infrastructure constructed by contractors does not meet required standards, leading to frequent waterlogging and overflow during the monsoon season. This recurring problem, it said, poses risks to public health, disrupts daily life and damages local infrastructure.
With the monsoon approaching, WTC has appealed to the Department of National Highways to take swift corrective measures.
It called for engagement of qualified experts to evaluate the drainage system and identify strategic locations requiring urgent attention.
The council emphasized that prompt action was essential to improve drainage effectiveness and safeguard the well-being of Wokha residents.
