Agartala, Sep 16 (PTI): A joint operation by the Assam Rifles, DRI and police has led to the seizure of 12.26 lakh Yaba tablets valued at around Rs 98 crore from two districts of Tripura, officials said on Wednesday. Two persons, both from Assam, were apprehended in this connection, a statement by the Assam Rifles said.
Based on specific intelligence inputs, the Assam Rifles, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and police conducted separate operations at Khowai in Khowai district and Panisagar in North Tripura district on Tuesday night.
“The operations resulted in the seizure of 12,26,000 Yaba tablets valued at Rs 98.08 crore,” the release said.
In the first operation, security forces recovered 7,26,000 Yaba tablets valued at Rs 58.08 crore from Khowai Chowmuhani and arrested a resident of Itakhola in Assam’s Sonitpur district. In the second, the Assam Rifles and North Tripura Police recovered 5,00,000 Yaba tablets valued at Rs 40 crore from Panisagar and arrested a resident of Nagrmari in Assam’s Morigaon district, along with a truck.
Yaba tablets are methamphetamine-based stimulant drugs that are highly addictive, according to health authorities.
The recovery of more than 12 lakh Yaba tablets in two separate operations highlights the continued efforts of the Assam Rifles and other agencies to disrupt inter-state narcotics trafficking networks operating through the Northeast, the release added.
The arrested persons, recovered contraband and seized vehicle were handed over to the authorities for further investigation and legal proceedings, it added.
