YBBA pioneer Rev. Hopongkiu passes away at 108

DIMAPUR, AUG 4 (NPN): Yimkhiung Baptist Borü Amukhungto (YBBA) has expressed profound grief over the demise of Rev. K. Hopongkiu, one of the pioneering torchbearers of the Gospel among the Yimkhiung people and a founding pillar of the Yimkhiung Baptist Churches, who passed away in the early hours of August 4 at Zion Hospital, Dimapur. He was 108.
In a condolence message, YBBA executive secretary Rev. Dr. S.J. Akhum described Rev. Hopongkiu as a pioneer missionary whose unwavering commitment to Christ and tireless evangelistic work transformed countless lives. Travelling on foot from village to village, he faithfully preached the Gospel, nurtured believers and played a pivotal role in bringing the Yimkhiung Baptist churches together under one association.
Rev. Hopongkiu served the church in various capacities during his lifetime, including as pastor of Thoktsur Baptist Church (1955), Kiutsükiur Baptist Church (1958), Shamator Town Baptist Church (1961–1962), Anahtongre Baptist Church (1964–1966), Zaonger Baptist Church (1991–2000), Chessore Town Baptist Church (2002–2003), and as Home Evangelist at Shamator Town Baptist Church (2005–2009).
He also served as Evangelist of YBBA (1965–1969 and 1981), Field Director (1967–1969), Recording Secretary (1970–1980), Evangelism Director/Mission Secretary (1981–1990), and later as Kiutsükiur Borü “At Large Missionary” from 2010 until his demise.
Ordained as a Reverend on March 1, 1981, Rev. Hopongkiu’s life was described as a testimony of humble service, unwavering faith and sacrificial leadership.
YBBA said that although it mourned his passing, it rejoiced in the assurance that he now rests with the Lord whom he served faithfully throughout his life.
Extending its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, the association prayed that God would grant them strength, peace and hope during this time of grief.
