Yimkhiungs celebrate Tsakran Nyüng in Kohima & Pungro

Yimkhiungs celebrated Tsakran Nyüng in Kohima and Pungro Town on Saturday.

Kohima: Yimkhiung Union Kohima celebrated Tsakran Nyüng festival on the theme “Reminiscing Our Cultural Heritage” at the State Academy Hall, Kohima, Saturday. The event was graced by, Advisor for Fire & Emergency Services, Home Guards & Civil Defence, and Relief & Rehabilitation, S. Kiusumew Yimkhiung, as the special guest.


According to a DIPR report, in his address, the Advisor highlighted that the festival, traditionally celebrated after the millet harvest, inspires renewed enthusiasm for millet cultivation.

He also urged unity among the Yimkhiung tribe, particularly the Chirr-speaking community, and encouraged the youth to work hard and strive for success in competitive exams.


Speeches were delivered by, Advisor for Youth Resources and Sports, S. Keoshu Yimchunger, former VCC of Salomi village, Shophu, Finance Secretary of the Yimkhiung Tribal Council, M. Yinkiu, and former Chairman of the Kohima Municipal Council, Vipopal Kintso. Superintendent of Police (MT), Er. Muleki explained the significance of the Tsakran Nyüng festival.


The celebration featured cultural songs and dances performed by Alemla and H. Shehtsulam.


Pungro: Yimkhiung community celebrated Tsakran Nyüng at Pungro Town, on the theme “Harmony through Heritage”. It is mainly celebrated by the Chirr speaking community of the Yimkhiung Naga tribe. Speaking on the importance of the festival, ADC Pungro, James Khulu stressed on the importance of the perseverance of culture. He urged upon the gathering not to be carried away by modernization but to remain rooted in one’s culture for the posterity.


Pungro Sub- Division GB’s Union President JB Shahoto, pointed out the diverse culture of the Yimkhiung Naga. He called upon all to celebrate and to live in unity. While extending the festival greetings Yimkhiung Tribal Council Executive Chairman, Y Makezho spoke on peace and prosperity and to live in harmony.


It may be noted that Tsakran Nyüng is celebrated from September 6 – 8 every year after the harvest of millet. It signifies thanksgiving and invoking for the bountiful yearlong harvest of the current year. The event also screened a short video clip on millet harvesting.
