The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) held its 35th annual regional council meeting at Livingstone Foundation International (LFI), Dimapur, on Friday, under the theme “Breaking Barriers and Striving Towards Common Achievements.”
Addressing the gathering as the guest of honor, Shaji James, secretary of Movement Strengthening, National Council of YMCAs of India, emphasized the importance of regional collaboration, youth engagement, and breaking socio-cultural barriers. He noted that June 6 marks YMCA’s Foundation Day, celebrating 181 years of community service.
James highlighted YMCA’s historical ties to the Industrial Revolution and its mission of spreading Christian values among youth. He stressed that community development remains a key focus, especially in the Northeast region, where plans are underway to launch various activities. He encouraged young people to harness their talents, noting that Northeast youth possess exceptional potential.
He cited YMCA’s impact in Kerala, mentioning that 50% of civil servants and many political leaders have been associated with YMCA, benefiting from its leadership training, career guidance, and public speaking programs.
Delivering the exhortation message, Geoffrey Yaden, Editor-in-Chief of Nagaland Post and advisor of Dimapur YMCA, emphasized that YMCA should not be limited to meetings or conferences but must expand its presence to more districts in the state.
He stressed the need for YMCA to be dynamic and impactful, bringing light and positive change to communities. Reflecting on the untapped potential in the state, Yaden pointed out that a lackadaisical attitude was preventing progress.
He urged attendees to embrace their role as facilitators of positivity, reminding them that despite the challenges in the world, Christians are called to spread hope and encouragement. Concluding his speech, he encouraged the gathering to remain steadfast, hopeful, and committed to strengthening themselves and their communities.
Former Regional chairman of YMCA NEIR, Dr. R. Lalthangliana, stressed the importance of frequent gatherings, noting that Northeast communities share close emotional ties. He highlighted YMCA’s role as the largest Non-Governmental International Organization (NGIO), with over 50 million members worldwide.
Earlier, the event was chaired by Vernon Fernandez, invocation by member, Dimapur YMCA, Zhimoholi, and welcome address delivered by chairman, Regional Council, YMCA, NEIR, Dr Andrew Ahoto.
A special number was presented by youth members of Dimapur YMCA, while a short message was delivered by Regional Director, NEIR, Y’s Men International, Prasanna Kumar, vote of thanks by secretary, Dimapur YMCA, Sanjeev Momin, and benediction by treasurer, Dimapur YMCA, Ani Yepthomi.
