Zapami village under Phek district observed “Sanitation Clean Day” on March 16 as a calendar event by PHED under the national rural drinking water and sanitation awareness week from March 16 – 22. The event is aimed at accelerating India’s goal — “Swachh Bharat” (Clean India) by 2019, an initiative of the government of India, Ministry of Rural Development Department of Drinking water supply.
A press release from Zapami village WATSAN committee chairman, Kedou Wetsah said that March 16 has been observed as “Village Sanitation Clean Day” annually by the committee towards achieving complete sanitation coverage status (NGP) which is the first of its kind in Phek district during 2009-2010 in Nagaland.
It stated that around 500 villagers took part in the mass social work on the occasion so as to harness information and knowledge for health and hygiene through sanitation. It further said that the WATSAN committee had been educating the rural people on the three dimensional cleanliness visualized by Mahatma Gandhi: clean mind, clean body, and clean surroundings. WATSAN committee has also erected sign boards which read ‘Keep your village clean’, ‘Keep your colony clean’, ‘Use dustbin’, etc.
The committee expressed its gratitude to WSSO, E.E. PHED Phek director, SDO (PHED) Pfutsero for “providing materials and kinds” to make the program a grand success. It also congratulated Tshunapa colony for winning the five colonies competition for cleanliness.
