Zeliangrong Baudi Nagaland (ZBN) and All Nchangram Students’ Union (ANSU) have appealed to the authorities for assistance to the families affected by the heavy downpour in Peren on March 26.
ZBN: ZBN in a press release stated that the heavy downpour accompanied by strong winds and hailstorm had caused severe damages to several houses, churches, electrical connection, livestock, crops and other properties in most part of Peren district, particularly under Tening and Ahthibung sub-divisions.
Besides flattening houses, it claimed that several standing houses had become inhabitable due destruction of roofs, causing panic and inconveniences to the people living in affected areas.
As such, ZBN urged the authorities and state government to immediately activate the mitigation works in affected areas at the earliest, besides appealing to the legislators of 6th Tening, 7th Peren constituencies to extend immediate help to the affected people.
ZBN said that along with other civil society organisations of Peren district it would extend fullest cooperation to the district administration in any task assigned.
ANSU: In a separate press release, ANSU president Tingwangsi Newmai stated that Nchangram and Azailong villages in Peren district faced an unprecedented onslaught of heavy rain, hailstones, and storm, resulting in widespread devastation to properties, livestock, and residential structures.
He claimed that the catastrophic event had left the affected communities reeling from substantial losses and damages.
He said preliminary assessments indicated that nearly all residences in the affected areas had suffered varying degrees of damage, ranging from partial destruction to complete devastation.
However, amidst the chaos and destruction, he mentioned that the silver lining emerged as there had been no reports of human casualties or fatalities. Nevertheless, the toll on livelihoods and homes was staggering, surpassing all expectations.
Extending a heartfelt appeal to the state government and relevant authorities to expedite the provision of urgent relief to the affected households, Newmai stressed that it was imperative to address the immediate needs of the affected families to alleviate their suffering and facilitate their recovery process.
Further, he pointed out that there was a pressing need for accurate assessments of the incurred damages to facilitate targeted assistance and rehabilitation efforts.
In light of this unprecedented natural disaster, he urged the authorities to mobilise all available resources and support mechanisms to aid the affected communities in rebuilding their lives.
Stating that the resilience of Nchangram and Azailong villages would be tested in the aftermath of this calamity, he emphasised that it was a collective responsibility to stand in solidarity with those affected and provide them with the necessary assistance and support they require.
