Requests Governor to summon special NLA session for vote of confidence
Chief minister T.R.Zeliang along with NPF president Dr.Shürhozelie and NPF secretary general K.G.Kenye requested Governor of Nagaland P.B.Acharya to summon a special session of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly so that the chief minister could move a confidence motion on the floor of the house to prove that he enjoyed majority support in the house.
According to a press communiqué issued by the media officer in the CM’s Office, the chief minister T.R.Zeliang handed over the request in the form of a letter addressed to the Governor Friday along with party president Dr. Shürhozelie and NPF secretary general K.G. Kenye. In the letter, it was pointed out that a situation has arisen wherein a great deal of confusion was created by the NPF dissidents who had asked the chief minister to step down “without any trial of strength in the legislative assembly”.
The chief minister pointed out that situation has confused the people of Nagaland besides affecting normal functioning of the government.
Zeliang said since the present government headed by him was a coalition government, the opinion of the coalition partners was required on who should lead the coalition. In order to resolve the matter, Zeliang said he wanted a vote of confidence motion on his government be tabled in the legislative assembly and would be grateful if necessary steps were taken to summon a special session of the house.
In the letter, the chief minister also termed it as a “total mockery of democracy on the part of the dissidents” in appointing a leader when the incumbent chief minister was duly elected by the DAN legislators and duly sworn-in by the Governor in accordance with the constitution.
He pointed out that election of the chief whip of the NPF legislature by the dissidents was “illegal” when the only authority to appoint the chief whip was the party president.
Zeliang said such tactics employed by the dissident was “only a desperate attempt to usurp power through undemocratic procedure and hijack democratic norms for their own selfish interests”.
Further Zeliang also said people of the state were made to suffer because of the dissident legislators who were out to topple a duly elected government without any regard for the welfare of the people. In the light of the above, the chief minister asserted that in order to “let truth prevail” so as to clear all confusions from the minds of the people, he had decided to seek a vote of confidence on the floor of the house.
