Zhekiye Village Union Dimapur (ZGKD) has accused Assam Police of killing a youth from the village cold blooded on April 4.
Terming the killing as barbaric and condemning it, the union requested the competent authorities to look into the matter in order to avoid future such incidents.
In a statement issued through its chairman Ghuvishe Zhimomi and secretary Hutoka Chishi, the union claimed that four youth had visited the Assam-Nagaland border area to collect some green leafy items from the jungle due to shortage of vegetables owing to the ongoing national lockdown.
However, on their way back home on foot around 7:30 pm, Assam Police personnel “ambushed them from two directions without any provocation and opened fire at them indiscriminately.” Consequently, one of them was shot dead, who has since been identified as Viloto Zhimo from Zhekiye village, while his three friends managed to flee.
Clarifying to the news item published in the local dailies, ZGKD alleged that Assam Police personnel, instead of detaining and questioning the youth, took law into their own hands by killing the innocent civilians.
The union alleged that the policemen even placed weapon beside the victim’s body, clicked photos and then upload it on social media that went viral. Hence, the question of exchange of fire as claimed by Khatkhati SDPO did not arise, it added.
It also termed the SDPO’s claim, that the victim was killed in an encounter, as totally baseless and fabricated to save their own skin. ZGKD asserted that the victim did not possess any weapon and was only carrying a bag of green leaves, torch light and his personal mobile phone at the time of the incident.
“The victim was an innocent civilian, educated unemployed youth who had completed M.Com from Guwahati University. He was neither underground nor he belonged to any armed group/gangster as falsely alleged by Assam Police,” the union clarified.
Accusing Assam Police of violating human rights, ZGKD said every Indian citizen had the right to move freely throughout the country.
