ASUS celebrates 50 years

Celebration of 50 years of its inception, Angami Students’ Union Shillong (ASUS) culminated its jubilation & release of Golden Jubilee Souvenir magazine at State Capital Convention Centre in Kohima on Friday.
ASUS was formed in Shillong in 1968, with an aim to create better understanding among the community, aid and support one another in times of need and to bring the whole tribe on to a common platform.
Convenor organizing committee, Lhouvirielie Üsou in his jubilee greetings said that since its establishment in 1968, ASUS had come a long way to become one of the leading student’s bodies in Shillong.
With the jubilee theme “Rise and Lead” Üsou said ASUS had always been a trend setter and had done things through example.
He said the jubilation offered an opportunity for ASUS to reflect upon the history of ASUS and the important contributions it has made to the personal and academic development and unity for over thousands and thousands of students, past and present.
As ASUS celebrates 50 years of success, Üsou said it had every reason to be proud of the union’s past and be excited about its future. He was confident that ASUS would continue its vocation of preparing students to engage successfully with the world for many more years to come.
Üsou mentioned that in the past 50 years, Shillong had produced many intellectuals who had gone on to become remarkable citizens of the Naga community, and of the country as a whole. The first president of the union, Kevisiezolie Suohu, in his account, acknowledged Shillong for opening doors for the Nagas to acquire knowledge.
He expressed hope that the present generation would build and serve the Nagas and he urged the students to introspect and to wake up before the “walls fall apart”.
Alumni, Thepfulhouvi Solo said it was ethical moral values that made the Angamis different from other cultures and urged the community to keep it alive. Former ASUS general secretary, Thejao Vihienuo and former president, Sochülie Solo also spoke at the event. Convener souvenir committee ASUS golden jubilee, Khriesaneisa Rutsa and Kevisiezolie Suohu released the 50 years souvenir magazine. Alumni from within and outside the state also attended the programme.
