Young boys take up waste collection task

With their locality facing severe problem of garbage dumping, a group young students in one of the colonies in Dimapur have come together to collect wastes from households and dispose at DMC garbage collection point.
Survival Nagaland (SN) movement members, who met with the young boys, said the colony residents comprising mostly of government servants were facing problem of disposing wastes as there was no proper drain or a dumping site.
As it was proving to be a big problem for the residents, SN said through the initiative of the former chairman of Supply Colony, Panger Jamir of Chungliyimsen village, the colony council bought a thela (hand-cart) to collect the waste from households.
It was when the young students came forward and volunteered to do the garbage collection job.
According to SN, the young boys collect dust-bins and other wastes on alternate days by charging a nominal fee of Rs.50 only from around 120 households.
SN stated that the boys, who come from respectable families, in-order to set an example of work culture and instil the dignity of labour, undertook the task.
At the same time, they were also earning some extra pocket-money and keeping their own colony clean, SN stated, adding that it plans to donate a thela shortly for such venture.
“If our leaders, local authorities and elders show the way then surely many young upcoming people are now eager to ‘Work and Eat’ and prove the critics wrong,” stated SN.
