Will unearth entire trafficking chain of drug kingpin Bahar Uddin, others: Police

Days after arresting the alleged drug kingpin, Bahar Uddin and his associates, Nagaland police on Tuesday assured that they “would endeavour to unearth the entire trafficking chain in this case and also other cases.”

Based on further leads, the police assured that more incisive action would follow in the coming days.
In a statement, Nagaland Police said that Bahar Uddin was one of the major drug traffickers of the Northeast and was primarily operating from Dimapur, with his supply chain having upward procurement and trafficking links in Manipur and downward sale linkages in Nagaland and Assam.

In connection with the ongoing investigation of a criminal case, police said that Bahar Uddin son of Nur Uddin, one of the major absconding accused, was arrested from Sonitpur, Assam while the other two were arrested from Dimapur and Imphal respectively.

Police said that multiple cases of ganja and sunflower/shanflower (heroin) trafficking had been registered against Bahar Uddin in Nagaland and other parts of country by different agencies.

Subsequent to his arrest, the Nagaland Police conducted searches at different locations in Dimapur to collect further evidences. Incriminating materials such as documents, bank papers, passbooks, multiple SIM cards issued in fictitious names, and mobile handsets have been recovered, the police claimed.
As per the investigation till now, Bahar Uddin procured and trafficked more than 800 soap cases of sunflower/shanflower (heroin) from different suppliers operating in Manipur during the past six to 10 months.

The police claimed that he was involved in ganja business since 1995, while detailed investigation regarding the cases and his role in trafficking of narcotics in the old as well as current cases was being undertaken.

Meanwhile, requesting the public to share information on any traffickers, the police also extended their appreciation to Angami Public Organisation, Angami Youth Organisation, Dimapur Ao Youth Organisation (DAYO), and other civil society organisations (CSOs) for actively extending assistance to the law enforcers whenever requested by deputing their representatives as witnesses, etc.

While possession and carrying of illicit drugs were offences, the police said financing and coordinating trafficking activities or assistance in trafficking by hiding drugs or proceeds of drugs or providing shelter to criminals or allowing traffickers to transfer funds, etc, were offences too and requested the public to exercise caution.

NWHD lauds police
Naga Women Hoho Dimapur (NWHD) has lauded the joint effort of Nagaland police and Assam police in apprehending one Bahar Uddin, the alleged drug kingpin of North East, along with his accomplices last month.

In a press release, NWHD stated that drug abuse had been a social menace of the society for a very long time, adding that today the statistic of youth and teenagers indulging in the abuse increased by huge margin, which was “indisputably” having an adverse effect in society.

Therefore, the hoho stated that the accused or anyone involved and engaged in such heinous activities for their personal gain was “strongly” condemnable. NWHD appealed to the criminal justice authorities and agencies to thoroughly investigate the matter in order to “eradicate such social evil once and for all.”
