SCPD orders NLA, HC complexes to be made barrier free

Following accessibility audit inspections conducted at the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) complex, Kohima on February 14, 2024 and High Court complex at Meriema, Kohima, on March 19, 2024, State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (SCPD) Diethono Nakhro has issued orders to both parties with a number of recommendations.
The respondents have been given three months’ time to comply with the recommendations and submit action taken report to the SCPD court.
Issued by the Central government under the provisions of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, the Harmonised Guidelines and Standards for Universal Accessibility in India, 2021 is a mandatory document to be implemented for all public buildings, both government as well as private establishments.
Hence, the SCPD directed that necessary renovations and retrofitting should be carried out to make the complexes barrier free and accessible for all citizens as mandated under the RPwD Act. This was stated in a press release by programme officer in the office of SCPD.
