Caste Census Will Bolster Tribal Status Demand for Left-Out Sikkim Communities: MP Indra Hang Subba

Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) MP Indra Hang Subba has asserted that the upcoming caste-based census will significantly strengthen the push for tribal status for the 12 left-out communities in Sikkim. He also emphasized its importance in resolving long-pending issues such as the Limboo-Tamang seat reservation and delimitation.

“The caste census will not hinder the tribal status demand. On the contrary, it will make our case clearer and more data-driven,” Subba said, dismissing opposition concerns that the exercise could delay the process. “The opposition is only creating confusion. Our communities must recognize the benefits of this census.”

He highlighted that the Sikkim government has already taken key political steps, including passing a resolution in the Legislative Assembly and forming a committee to prepare the required ethnographic report for submission to the Office of the Registrar General of India (ORGI).

Subba further noted that the caste census would provide a scientific basis for political representation, particularly in addressing the Limboo-Tamang seat reservation and delimitation. “The data will guide the delimitation process, and the state government is ready to work closely with the Centre,” he said.

Calling the census a “much-needed exercise,” the MP stressed its role in revealing socio-economic disparities and enabling more targeted policymaking for communities in Sikkim and across the country.
