As part of the nationwide observance of the 8th Rashtriya Poshan Maah, nutrition awareness programmes were conducted in Wokha and Medziphema to promote healthy living and combat malnutrition among women, children, and adolescents.
In Wokha, the Department of Social Welfare organised a nutrition awareness rally on September 30, led by the District Programme Officer (ICDS) at the DC Office compound. Additional Deputy Commissioner Renbomo Ezung, who graced the event as special guest, flagged off the rally and emphasized the importance of nutrition in improving community health. He highlighted this year’s Poshan Maah themes—addressing obesity, early childhood care and education under Poshan Bhi Padhai Bhi, infant and young child feeding (IYCF), men’s involvement in caregiving, and the campaign Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam. He urged all stakeholders to make the observance impactful across the district.
The rally, which culminated at NST Junction, saw enthusiastic participation from Anganwadi workers and helpers carrying placards on Poshan Abhiyaan initiatives such as growth monitoring, complementary feeding, and maternal and child health. The Poshan Pledge was administered to reinforce commitment to nutrition goals.
As part of Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, fruit saplings were distributed for plantation at Anganwadi centres, symbolising care for both mothers and the environment. The Forest Department, Wokha Division, provided the saplings, while the District Administration, Medical Department, Traffic Police, and SP Office extended support for the smooth conduct of the programme.
Meanwhile, ICAR-KVK Dimapur observed Poshan Maah at Medziphema Town on September 29. The programme focused on raising awareness about balanced diets and reducing the consumption of salt, sugar, and oil. Dr Chingakham Sima Chanu, SMS (Home Science), KVK Dimapur, delivered a session on the health risks associated with ultra-processed foods and their link to non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, obesity, diabetes, cancer, and hormonal imbalances including PCODs in women. She also provided dietary recommendations for managing these conditions.
Dr Moanaro, Technical Officer, KVK Dimapur, addressed the growing concern of obesity in the state and stressed the need for lifestyle changes.
A highlight of the programme was the Poshan Thali competition featuring Angami traditional cuisines. Participants discussed ways to modify traditional diets for improved nutrition. A total of 24 women from Medziphema took part in the event.
Both initiatives reaffirmed the commitment of local authorities and institutions to promote nutrition awareness and holistic health through community engagement.
