Dimapur Nkonjan Aree Kyon Khungtsuta (DNAKK) has expressed concern that the private Amur Falcon roosting site at Aree Old Village in Wokha district, is reportedly being neglected by authorities despite repeated appeals by the landowner, raising concerns over the conservation of the migratory birds.
In a press note, DNAKK chairman said that the 221-acre site, a virgin forest bounded by Chumaya River in the north, Temremchu River in the south, Aree Old Village in the east, and Doyang River in the west, is owned by T. Tsenpemo Kikon, a permanent resident of Aree Old Village.
According to the landowner, the site has been managed solely by him to ensure the safety and conservation of wildlife, stating the government authorities– including the Chief Warden Wildlife, Nagaland, DFO Wokha, and Wildlife Warden Dimapur- have not responded to repeated written requests, despite the provision of relevant documents.
DNAKK said that earlier roosting sites at Riphyim and Pangti villages had received government support under Article 371(A) of the Constitution. In 2019, DNAKK said the roosting site migrated to Aree Old Village, and since then, the number of migratory birds has reportedly increased a hundredfold in 2024 and 2025.
In 2021, it said that the Chief Wildlife Warden visited the site with the village council and assured assistance, as the land had become unproductive. However, no follow-up action has been taken, it said. Despite this, the landowner continues to accommodate the birds, incurring significant financial and livelihood losses.
DNAKK said that the landowner has appealed to the state government for immediate intervention to witness the Amur Falcon roosting during October and November and to address the matter seriously for the interest of wildlife conservation.
