The North Eastern Council (NEC) on Wednesday said it recorded an expenditure of close to Rs 1,500 crore in the 2025-2026 financial year, marking a significant push in infrastructure and development across the region, officials said.
The expenditure of Rs 1,496.78 includes Rs 792.12 crore under the Schemes of NEC (SoNEC) and Rs 704.66 crore under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme Roads (NESIDS-Roads), reflecting a major thrust on connectivity and core sector development, they said.
Officials said 54 new projects worth Rs 435.22 crore were sanctioned during the year across sectors such as higher education, health infrastructure, agriculture and horticulture, tourism and livelihood generation, while an additional 162 non-project activities worth Rs 24.06 crore were also approved.
In terms of delivery, 136 projects worth Rs 678.85 crore were completed during 2025-2026, along with 161 non-project activities, taking the total number of completed deliverables to 297.
Highlighting the focus on connectivity, officials said under NESIDS-Roads, 64 projects worth Rs 3,037.39 crore have been sanctioned across the Northeast during the 15th Finance Commission period, of which 30 projects worth Rs 1,123.08 crore have already been completed.
The NEC Secretariat also conducted 405 field inspections during the year to ensure quality control, timely execution and accountability in project implementation.
In a significant governance achievement, committed liabilities were reduced from Rs 1,743.48 crore in April 2022 to Rs 813.17 crore by March 2026, while pending utilisation certificates declined sharply by over 97 per cent to Rs 10.94 crore in 2025-2026, officials said.
They added that the council will continue to work with northeastern states, including Meghalaya, to accelerate inclusive growth and achieve the goal of a developed Northeast by 2047.
