Dimapur police solve kidnapping-extortion case, arrest 2

DIMAPUR, MAY 8 (NPN): Dimapur police have solved a kidnapping and extortion case registered with East Police Station on April 21, 2026, with the arrest of both accused persons and the seizure of digital evidence, including CCTV footage.
In a press note, commissioner of police Dimapur informed that the complainant, Ruhon Das of Sematilla, Dimapur, reported that on April 20, 2026, at around 7pm, two unidentified men followed and forcibly restrained him near Murgipatti while he was returning home from his shop at Hongkong Market.
The accused took him toward the highway near the DMC office, threatened him, and extorted money.
The accused allegedly snatched Das’s mobile phone, forced him to reveal his Google Pay password, and withdrew Rs. 6,000 from his account at an IOC petrol pump at Ghorapatti. The accused later released him near Vishal Mega Mart.
Following the complaint, East Police Station police personnel collected CCTV footage from the petrol pump and surrounding areas, which helped identify the suspects.
A case was registered under Sections 137(2) and 308(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Through technical surveillance, intelligence, and field operations, police arrested the first accused identified as one M. Stephen Yanthan, on April 28. The second accused identified as one Chumbenthung Yanthan, was arrested on May 6.
Police clarified that no weapon was involved in the incident, contrary to earlier media reports.
The commissioner of police has appreciated the investigation team for the swift detection of the case. Police have assured the public that every serious offence was dealt with promptly and professionally, and all efforts were continuously being made to ensure safety and security of the public.
Police said successful detection of the case within a short span of time reflected the commitment and coordinated efforts of the police personnel involved in the investigation.
