M’laya CM distributes Rs 20,000 relocation grants to vendors

Shillong, Sep 14 (NPN): Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday distributed one-time relocation assistance of Rs 20,000 each to vendors who have been shifted to designated vending zones at Barik and Dhankheti within Shillong city limits.
The distribution was held in the presence of Arts and Culture Minister and BJP legislator Sanbor Shullai, former Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh and officials of the Urban Affairs department.
Interacting with the relocated vendors, the Chief Minister said the exercise had been possible because of the cooperation of all stakeholders involved in the process.
“Though it may look like a small and simple step, it is one of the most challenging situations that we have faced because it is not only about development but linked with the livelihood of the people and the overall beautification of the city,” he said.
The Rs 20,000 assistance has been provided to help vendors manage expenses during the relocation and transition period.
Under the arrangement, Rs 10,000 will be transferred immediately to each beneficiary through Direct Benefit Transfer, followed by Rs 2,000 per month for the next five months.
Sangma said prime locations had been identified for the vendors to strike a balance between protecting their livelihoods and improving the appearance of roads and public spaces in Shillong.
Urging residents and tourists to visit the designated vending zones, the Chief Minister said the vending zones would be developed as vibrant public spaces with facilities such as toilets, seating areas and decorative lighting.
“Vending zones should not just be places where people come to buy things. We want to create a lively environment where people can spend time and enjoy themselves,” he said.
Sangma said that live performances would also be organised in the evenings to make the areas more attractive to residents and visitors.
