The Centre for Development Initiatives (CDI) Dimapur and Kohima observed International Domestic Workers Day 2025 under the theme “Recognizing Care, Advancing Dignity and Rights for the Domestic Workers” on Monday.
In Dimapur, the event was held at Zeliangrong Village, Dimapur, where CDI Dimapur has identified 665 domestic workers so far, of which over 500 are registered and grouped under 32 collectives across Dimapur.
Speaking on the theme, Social Work Professional and former Project Coordinator of Child Friendly Dimapur, AIDA, Garrol Lotha stressed the importance of recognising and respecting domestic workers. She recalled that in earlier times, domestic workers were often referred to by derogatory terms such as “mini” or “kancha,” which led many to feel ashamed of their profession. However, she noted that society has progressed, with greater awareness and sensitivity replacing outdated views. Today, such language is no longer acceptable, and many have begun to embrace the dignity of the profession. She encouraged workers to take pride in their profession, describing them as caregivers and home managers. She called for dignity in all forms of work and urged domestic workers to be confident and continue learning.
She also highlighted the need for mutual respect between employer and employee, pointing out that domestic workers are often trusted members of households and should uphold that trust. Garrol also reminded the participants that they have the right to refuse work under unfair or unhealthy conditions.
She informed the gathering about support systems such as Sakhi – One Stop Centre, Women Helpline Nagaland (181), Police Control Room, and free legal services offered by Dimapur District Legal Services Authority (DDLSA).
The programme also featured experience sharing by a domestic worker, cultural performances, and a brief overview of CDI Dimapur’s activities and achievements presented by Field Animator, Kuphuvili Lohe.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by Field Animator, Nzanboni Ezung, and the vote of thanks was delivered by Kuphuvili Lohe. A total of 201 domestic workers, including children, attended the event.
At Kohima, the programme was held at D Block Panchayat Hall. Sr. Mercy, MSMHC, offered the invocation, and Sr. Rincy, Incharge CDI Nagaland, welcomed the participants.
Keynote speaker, Ruvuotuonuo Ruth, Councillor of Cheiphobozou Town Council, spoke on the importance of recognising domestic workers as essential contributors to homes and communities. She encouraged the workers to carry out their duties with pride and dignity.
The programme included a special performance by Helena Swu and a message by CDI Field Animator, Aneibu Theunuo. Tokens of appreciation were handed to all domestic workers present. The event was moderated by Field Animator, Sarah Swu, and attended by officials from the District Child Protection Unit, Legal Cell, and MSW interns.
CDI reaffirmed its commitment to advocate for the rights, dignity, and welfare of domestic workers through continued awareness and community engagement.
