Heavy rains on the night of August 25 resulted in vast areas being flooded in Dimapur- disrupting movement, and affecting 591 households, though no casualty was reported.
According to District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) chairman and DC Dimapur, Dr. Tinojongshi Chang, around 2,300 people were affected. The worst-hit areas were – Central Colony Walford (250 households), East Police Colony (250), SM Colony (38), Vilhume Colony (35), and Sunjem (18). The DC said further details of damages would be known after assessment.
In Vilhume Colony, member Vikesalie Savino said the area began to be flooded at around 10:15 p.m., forcing evacuation of 35 families by 11:54 p.m. Most residents stayed with relatives or well-wishers for the night.
Senjum Village chairman Chenithung Ezung said only two houses were affected as most of the village lies in a hilly area. He appealed for relief measures for the affected families.
Central colony, Walford chairman Kato Yeptho reported the colony was submerged under water, with levels rising up to five feet in some areas around 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Residents were evacuated with many taking shelter in homes of family and friends. Yeptho blamed the incident on poor drainage.
Similarly at East Police Colony a resident said the water began to flood the area around 10:00 p.m. and later at 2:00 a.m. in others. He too cited poor drainage as the recurring cause of seasonal flooding.
In SM Colony, the Gaon Bura (GB) said water reached thigh level but evacuation was not required. “Our area has become like a main drainage, water from Rail Bazaar, Kevijua, and especially Thahekhu all flows here,” he lamented.
State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) commandant M. Yingyei Konyak informed that a distress call from Vilhume Colony was received around 11:00 p.m. A team was immediately dispatched, but by the time they arrived, residents had already evacuated. The team remained on-site briefly before concluding the operation, he added.
