Colors of culture, strength of unity — India celebrates Ekta Diwas

As the nation commemorates Ekta Diwas, or National Unity Day, on October 31, India once again pays tribute to one of its greatest architects of unity — Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Iron Man of India. This day is not merely an observance of his birth anniversary but a celebration of the enduring strength of India’s unity, diversity, and integrity — the very essence of the world’s largest democracy.
A visionary who united a nation
When India gained independence in 1947, the newborn nation stood fragmented into more than 560 princely states, each with its own ruler, ambitions, and fears. The dream of a united India was fragile, hanging by a thread of diplomacy and determination. At this critical juncture, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel emerged as the leader who transformed this vision into reality. With his remarkable political foresight, firmness, and tactful negotiation skills, Patel successfully persuaded and, when necessary, pressed the princely states to join the Union of India.Through his relentless efforts, the map of India as we know it today took shape. His unyielding commitment to national integration earned him the title of the Iron Man of India and cemented his legacy as the founding unifier of modern India.
Genesis of Ekta Diwas
To honor Patel’s unmatched contribution to the nation, the Government of India, in 2014, declared October 31st as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day). Since then, the day has been observed nationwide to reaffirm India’s collective commitment to unity, integrity, and security. The inaugural celebration, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, witnessed a nationwide “Run for Unity”, symbolizing the spirit of togetherness and shared national purpose. Over the years, Ekta Diwas has grown into a day of reflection — reminding every Indian of the value of harmony amid diversity.
The Statue of Unity: A Towering Symbol of Oneness
Standing tall on the banks of the Narmada River in Kevadia, Gujarat, the Statue of Unity serves as a monumental tribute to Sardar Patel’s vision. At 182 meters, it is the tallest statue in the world, representing the magnitude of Patel’s contributions and the depth of India’s gratitude. Inaugurated on October 31, 2018, by the Prime Minister, the statue not only attracts millions of visitors each year but also serves as a living monument to the power of unity. The site has evolved into an educational and inspirational hub, where citizens and students alike learn about Patel’s life, ideals, and the significance of national integration.
Nationwide celebrations
Across India, Ekta Diwas is marked by an outpouring of patriotic fervor. Government institutions, schools, universities, and public organizations organize a range of activities — from Unity Pledges, Marathons (Run for Unity), and Cultural Programs to Seminars, Exhibitions, and Essay Competitions. In New Delhi, the Prime Minister leads the nation in paying homage at the Statue of Unity or its replica, delivering a message on the need to strengthen the nation’s fabric against divisive forces. State governments, too, hold unity marches and community events to encourage participation from all sections of society. Social media platforms buzz with tributes to Sardar Patel, spreading his timeless message of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat” (One India, Great India).
Relevance in today’s India
More than seven decades after independence, the ideals of Ekta Diwas remain as relevant as ever. In a rapidly changing world — where social, regional, and ideological differences often threaten to divide communities — Patel’s message of cohesion and collective strength offers a guiding light. India’s unity has always been its greatest strength, enabling it to stand resilient in the face of adversity. From natural disasters to global challenges, the country’s ability to come together as one reflects the spirit that Sardar Patel envisioned. The observance of Ekta Diwas urges every citizen to uphold that unity — not just in slogans, but in daily action: respecting differences, embracing inclusivity, and working together for progress.
Sardar Patel’s enduring message
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s life remains a testament to service, integrity, and national pride. His vision extended beyond political boundaries — he dreamed of a united, strong, and self-reliant India where every citizen shared a sense of belonging.
He once said
“Manpower without unity is not a strength unless it is harmonized and united properly, then it becomes a spiritual power.”
These words continue to echo through generations, reminding us that unity is not merely a political ideal, but a moral and spiritual strength — the foundation of a prosperous India.
Celebrating unity in diversity
As India celebrates Ekta Diwas 2025, the occasion serves as both a tribute and a call to action. It reminds every Indian that unity is not inherited — it must be nurtured, protected, and lived every day.In a country as vast and diverse as India, true strength lies not in uniformity but in harmony. As Sardar Patel once united a fragmented nation, it is now the duty of every citizen to keep that unity alive — through tolerance, understanding, and the shared dream of a stronger, more inclusive India. In celebrating Ekta Diwas, we do not merely honor the past — we shape the future of a united India.
“Ekta Diwas reminds us that the power of India lies in its unity — a bond forged by Sardar Patel, and carried forward by every Indian.”
