CSU slams delay in NH-29 project

DIMAPUR: Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) has reaffirmed its strong opposition to the “slow progress, false assurances and incompetence” in the execution of the NH-29 two-lane Package-II (Kohima–Jessami Road) project undertaken by NHIDCL and EPC contractor M/S Ratna Infra Projects Pvt. Ltd.
In a press statement, CSU president Povozo Soho and general secretary Rhilo Chiero said the matter was raised at the first union assembly for the 2026–2028 tenure held at Phek village on May 23, attended by 55 affiliated and subordinate units. CSU pointed out that as per the agreement, the company was required to complete the project within the stipulated period, which expired on January 6, 2026. Despite repeated protests and demands, assurances from the company yielded no positive outcome. NHIDCL further extended the contract till September 24, 2026, which the Union termed as negligence and repeated failure.
It noted that during a meeting held at Pfutsero in May 2025 with NHIDCL, district administration, CPO, CYF, CMA and other stakeholders, it was agreed that the project would be completed within the timeframe. However, as of May 6, 2026, physical progress stood at only 43% and financial progress at 41%.
Expressing deep frustration, CSU said the extension of the contract period disregarded the legitimate demands of the Union and violated prior agreements. It resolved to continue its democratic movement to ensure timely completion, quality workmanship and regular maintenance of the road. The assembly also endorsed the matter to CSU officials for further pursuance and assured full support. Other agendas discussed included monitoring of educational institutions, strict implementation of ILP system, addressing irregularities among government employees, exemption from taxation for local entrepreneurs and businesses, and other public welfare concerns.
