Dimapur Press Club (DPC) has expressed deep concern over what was described as “threats and harassment” aimed at stifling press freedom citing a recent verbal assault on a journalist which it said, was part of a continuous pattern of abuse by Nagaland’s politicians and extra-constitutional entities.
It asserted this culture of intimidation must end, stressing a collective effort is imperative for a safer press environment. DPC further warned that weakening the press, a watchdog for the people, is an attack on democracy. It cautioned against normalizing such attempts and called for societal solidarity to defend the institution.
In the light of the issue, DPC has called on journalists to reaffirm their commitment to core values, stating credibility built on verification and fairness is journalism’s greatest asset.
It said that in an era of attacks from state and non-state actors, objectivity and factual reporting distinguish journalism from propaganda. DPC also cautioned journalists against becoming pawns in political intrigues or serving powerful interests, reiterating that the press must act as an independent monitor of power, not a vessel for political mileage.
