Eastern Nagaland Sumi Students’ Union (ENSSU) has found several lapses in government schools during its official tour from June 10 to 13. The union discovered that many teachers were absent from duty and has served them a one-week ultimatum to return to their stations. If they fail to comply, legal action will be taken.
In a press release, ENSSU said the team inspected government-aided schools and various government offices. While they appreciated the sincere efforts of many teachers, the Union expressed disappointment with those who continue to ignore calls to stay at their assigned posts.
The Union also raised concerns about the absence of key officials at Seyochung ADC and Sitimi EAC headquarters. While a few support staff were found at Seyochung, the Sitimi EAC office was locked with no staff present. ENSSU noted that the EAC post at Sitimi has been vacant for over three years, seriously affecting administration. They appealed to the Chief Minister, who also holds the P&AR portfolio, to urgently appoint an officer and warned that further neglect would result in action.
Several government offices were found non-functional during the visit. These included the SDEO (Education), SDEO (Agriculture), and SDO (Soil) offices in Seyochung, and the BDO, CDPO, and Veterinary Dispensary in Sitimi. These offices were locked and unattended, drawing strong criticism from the student body.
ENSSU was satisfied with the functioning of health centers in both towns, saying they were operating as per government norms. However, they expressed concern over incomplete construction of medical staff quarters, abandoned for more than three years. They urged the concerned department to take legal action against the contractor and speed up the project, warning they may be forced to act if the issue is not resolved.
The union also visited the Lighthouse NECTAR project at Government High School, Sitimi and found out that work has stopped due to lack of funds. ENSSU therefore appealed to the concerned department to release pending payments and asked the contractor, M/S 3S Infra, to deploy adequate workers and equipment. They also warned the contractor not to let personal issues affect the project.
