The Excise department on February 24 destroyed seized drugs worth approximately Rs 2.4 crore at the excise directorate complex here, in compliance with provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and under court orders.
The destruction was carried out in the presence of the duly constituted Drugs Disposal Committee and senior officials, ensuring transparency and adherence to legal procedures. The seized items were disposed of at an authorised facility in accordance with environmental and safety guidelines prescribed by the Nagaland Pollution Control Board.
The destroyed consignments, seized by the District Excise and Narcotic Cell in Dimapur, included 483 bottles of codeine cough syrup, 1,175 grams of heroin, 201 capsules of Spasmo Proxyvon and 42 tablets of Alzolam.
The programme was chaired by the joint commissioner of excise (narcotic cell). Additional commissioner of excise S. Chanlei Angh lauded enforcement personnel for their efforts in curbing illegal drug activities despite manpower shortages and limited technical and surveillance support. Superintendents of excise, Dimapur district and Narcotic Cell, presented reports on the seized articles.
Meanwhile, on February 19, the Narcotic Cell seized around 250 grams of suspected opium powder (brown sugar), valued at Rs 12.5 lakh, from a petrol pump near DDSC Stadium, Dimapur. One person was arrested and remanded to judicial custody pending FSL test results. Investigation is ongoing.
The department appealed for public cooperation and assured protection to informers.
