The Himalayan Cleanup campaign initiated by Integrated Mountain Initiative (IMI) and Zero Waste Himalayas across the 12 mountain states of India and coordinated by the Sustainable Development Forum Nagaland (SDFN) is all set to be executed on May 26.
According to a press release from Amba Jamir, executive director, Sustainable Development Forum Nagaland (SDFN), the Himalayan Cleanup is being organised to focus attention on the problem of waste in the mountains, specifically single use plastic waste.
The Himalayan Cleanup aims to bring the growing issue of the Himalayan region being littered, to the fore, through a day dedicated to not only cleaning up the mountains, but also in understanding what is causing the mess. In keeping with the global World Environment Day 2018 theme of Beat Plastic Pollution, this campaign will provide key insights into how much of the trash collected is plastic waste; plastics that can be recycled, and plastics that are single – use disposables through a process of waste audits and brand audits.
The Cleanup has attracted over 100s of signups from different states and Nagaland holds the record of the highest number of registrations. In Nagaland, the Cleanup Campaign is being undertaken in the districts of Dimapur, Kohima, Mon, Mokokchung, Phek and Zunheboto. More than 94 organizations in these 6 districts are involved in the Cleanup drive which has established partnerships between peoples organizations and that of state agencies and district administrations.
