A fire purportedly ignited by the lightning strike has completely destroyed a tourist cottage in Longrangtenem Park of Mopungchuket village under Mokokchung district on the night of September 12, 2023.
In a letter to the to the director tourism department, the MCTS convener Limalenden Longkumer stated that lightning strike occurred at around 11 pm. MCTS informed that debris of destroyed cottage was discovered only in the morning of September 13. MCTS informed that Longrangtenem Park was one of the two community-owned parks at Mopungchuket village.
It stated that the destroyed cottage was one of the four tourist cottages in the gated park.
MCTS stated that the “unforeseen natural calamity” happened at a time when the villagers were gearing up for the approaching tourist season from October to December.
As the mandated entity for overseeing all tourism activities and management in the popular rural tourism destination, MCTS said it has taken stock of the situation. It stated that tourism in the village was not likely to be hampered by the unfortunate natural calamity.
