Menstrual Hygiene Day observed in Nagaland

PHED Rural Division Dimapur, in collaboration with Highland Hall Higher Secondary School and Menstrual Initiative Nagaland (MIN), observed Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28, 2025, under the theme “Together for a Period-Friendly World.”
The event focused on promoting menstrual health and sustainable waste management. The program was chaired by Debashree, a teacher at HHHS. Imojungla Longkumer, District Coordinator of PHED Dimapur, spoke on menstrual waste management, highlighting the importance of normalizing conversations about menstruation, using sustainable products, and adopting responsible waste disposal practices.
Linoka Zhimomi, IEC Consultant of PHED Rural Dimapur, led the Menstrual Hygiene Day pledge, followed by a vote of thanks from Er. Kumugha K. Shohe, SDO PHED Kuhuboto.
A key highlight was the demonstration of a mini-incinerator by Er. Kugha H. Chishi, JE, PHED Kuhuboto. The incinerator was later handed over to the school for safe disposal of sanitary waste. The initiative emphasized the environmental impact of improper menstrual waste disposal and the need for sustainable practices.
Meanwhile, Menstrual Initiative Nagaland (MIN) distributed 750 free sanitary pads and hygiene products to young girls and women in Dimapur, Chumoukedima, and Kohima. This was done in collaboration with Women Helpline 181, Nagaland.
Loreni Sophia, advisor of MIN, stressed the need for accessible and affordable menstrual products to reduce period poverty. She urged governments, educators, and policymakers to prioritize menstrual hygiene education and improve awareness through state-wide sensitization efforts.
