DIMAPUR, MAY 27 (NPN): Nagaland Lok Sabha MP, S Supongmeren Jamir, on Wednesday welcomed the Centre’s decision to recognise 19 notified tribal languages and dialects of Nagaland in the engagement process of Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS), describing it as a major step towards safeguarding employment opportunities and protecting the linguistic identity of indigenous Nagas.
The move follows efforts initiated by the MP over the past year, during which he had raised concerns that the GDS recruitment system under the department of posts that placed local candidates at a disadvantage by considering only English or Hindi marks in Class X examinations, while overlooking proficiency in tribal dialects widely spoken across Nagaland.
Jamir had earlier urged the state government to officially recognise tribal dialects as a “third language” for postal recruitment as hundreds of GDS posts had been advertised in Nagaland without adequate consideration for local linguistic realities.
Subsequently, the state government, through the home department, officially notified 19 tribal languages and dialects in December 2025 for certifying language proficiency of GDS applicants under the department of posts. The notified languages include Angami, Ao, Chang, Chakhesang, Konyak, Khiamniungan, Lotha, Phom, Pochury, Rengma, Sümi, Sangtam, Tikhir, Yimkhiung, Zeliang, Garo, Mikir, Kuki and Kachari.
NPCC communications department said Jamir has expressed gratitude to the state home department, Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhutso, MLA, state chief secretary and director of postal services, Kohima, Dr. Alice K. Vizo, for their support in pursuing the policy reform.
He also welcomed the office memorandum issued by the department of posts on May 21, 2026 recognising proficiency in the notified tribal languages and dialects for GDS engagement in Nagaland. MP said the reform would ensure greater inclusivity and representation of Naga youth in postal recruitment while strengthening preservation and promotion of indigenous tribal languages and cultural heritage across the state.
